De hockeyclub
Een van mijn vriendinnen, laten we haar Hetty noemen, heeft een geweldig
netwerk. De tuinclub, de Rotary, om er maar een paar te noemen en haar fantastische hockeyclub.
Een aantal jaren geleden kreeg zij borstkanker. Toen zij dat aan haar hockeyvriendinnen vertelde, zei die club eendrachtig: Wij zullen er voor je zijn.
En zij deden wat ze beloofden. Ze gingen mee naar afspraken, ze troostten en ondersteunden, en op de dag van de vreselijke amputatie lieten ze haar niet alleen. Ze bleven bij haar in het ziekenhuis en vertelden haar dat ze bij haar bleven tot ze van vermoeidheid in slaap zou vallen en dat ze als ze wakker werd er ook weer zouden zijn.
De man van Hetty, Job, steunde haar ook. Hij zei: ‘Jij bent Hetty, en niet twee borsten, je blijft Hetty en of je nou één of twee borsten hebt, dat maakt niet uit. Daar word je niet minder Hetty van. Laat die operatie doen en concentreer je op gezond worden.’ Job, kaakchirurg in hetzelfde ziekenhuis, zorgde ook voor optimisme en medisch inzicht.
Na veertien dagen ziekenhuis, zo ging dat toen nog, mocht Hetty zonder borst en zonder lymfeklier in haar oksel, naar huis. Van de hockeyvriendinnen kreeg ze een veertiendaags menu. Elke dag, twee weken lang, kwam één van de hockeyvriendinnen ’s avonds aan de deur met een dienblad met een bloem en het heerlijke maaltijd voor Hetty’s gezin.
Na verloop van tijd, omdat Hetty natuurlijk Hetty gebleven was, ging zij weer sporten. Na het hockyen zeiden de dames, we begrijpen het als je je thuis wilt douchen. ‘Nee,’ zei Hetty, ‘ik wil dat jullie dit zien. Zo zie ik er nu uit. Als je er niet naar wilt kijken, draai je je ogen maar weg, maar ik wil dat jullie dit zien.’
En zo geschiedde. De dames waren onder de indruk. Goed zo, Hetty. Fantastisch. En griezelig vonden ze het niet. Ja, mijn vriendin Hetty en haar vriendinnen zijn mensen die behalve hard kunnen rennen en met een stick slaan, mededogen hebben en met oplossingen komen. En als je de dames nodig hebt staan ze voor je klaar.
Zo was Hetty altijd al, en dus nu ook nog. Leve Hetty en haar hockeyclub.
Zo’n regering zouden we moeten hebben. Met zulke vrouwen als in die kleine Zeeuwse club. Daar hoeven we geen borsten voor af te zetten, maar dan kregen we een regering met mededogen en gezond verstand. En bepaald een betere wereld.
